POCONO BASE HAPPENINGS

Pg  3

MEMBERSHIP

Congratulations Shipmates, we have a 100% renewal for 2005.
All of our 44 members have sent in their dues for this year.
We presently have 9 of our members listed as "Holland Club" members. One of the benefits of being a Holland Club member is that you no longer are required to pay annual dues to either USSVI or Pocono Base.
So…. If you are qualified for over 50 years and have been a member of USSVI for at least 5 years, then you are eligible to be a Holland Club member.
Please contact John R Saeli ( Pocono Base membership Chairman) at (570) 698-0726 if you meet those criteria and I will get the paperwork started.

Let's try to recruit some new members this year and get our Sailing List up to 50 members by the years end.

PARADES

Pocono Base has a few parades coming up this spring and we need your participation.
It would be great to have 1/3 of our members march in these events. That would be only 15 members and a great improvement to the usual 5 or so members that show up every year.
The Base Commander of Long Island Base ( Bill Beach) says: " BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE", so why not come march with us and let the people of NE Pa know who we are and be damn proud of it.
Our first scheduled parade for this year is the Annual Armed Forces Day Parade in Scranton, which will be held on Saturday, 21 May.
We will be forming up at our usual spot ( Capouse St and Olive) at 0930 hrs and stepping out at 1000 hrs.
We will be stopping off for food and drink afterwards, so bring your appetites.
If any of you sailors aren't able to march, we will have a car available for you to ride in--so give Jeff, our Base Commander, a call at (570) 942-4622 so he can make the arrangements.

Our next parade is the Memorial Day Parade in

Pocono Pines, on Monday morning, 30 May.
We will be forming up at the Tobyhanna Elementary School in Pocono Pines at 0930.
Refreshments will be served at the Wilson E. Fischer American Legion Post immediately following the Ceremonies.
The Wilson E Fischer Post lets us have our meetings there at no charge, so it would be great if we could have a nice turnout to sort of say thanks.

We have also been invited this year to the Veterans Day Ceremonies in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, 12 Nov 2005.
There will be a morning brunch, then the parade, and refreshments afterwards will be served at the 109th Armory. Shipmate Steve Vergalito is the point man for this parade and he will keep us updated on locations and times as it gets closer.  If you have any questions , then call him at ( 570)823-5964.

CHANGE OF MEETING NOTICE

We have moved our June meeting from Wed, 15 June to Tues afternoon, 14 June at 1600 hrs.
This was done to accommodate some of our WWII members who have found making the evening meetings a little rough.
We are also scheduled to attend the Flag Burning Ceremony at the Legion later on that evening at 1800 hrs.
Pocono Base will be serving a Hot Buffet Dinner at no charge for our members, immediately after the meeting.
Please give Past Base Commander, Tom Shields a call at (570) 595-9648 if you plan on attending, so he can have an idea on how many people to prepare dinner for.

We had 12 members attend our last meeting at the Marine League in Scranton. While this is a pretty good ratio, we would like to see some new faces once in a while.
SubVets Pocono Base is growing and we need your input on how to make it better, so why not try to attend at least 2 or 3 meetings this year. It is not fair to leave it up to the same 15 members or so to keep getting things done--- besides we are running out of Sea Stories.
